Quince 1701 Octavia Street 415 775 8500 You know it's San Francisco dining when they're serving you nettles and telling you all about the medicinal benefits of them. That's right. Stinging nettles. Apparently good for curing TB (does anyone get that any more?) and promoting hair growth (we suddenly really wanted to check the kitchen to see if they were judiciously using hair nets...) Fortunately by the time the truly bizarre dish gets to you, they no longer sting, no longer cause rashes and they've metamorphasised into something called "nettle sformato with Villa Mille Rose olio nuovo". (In case you're wondering that's nettles with new oil.) Us personally? We favoured the Roman- style oxtails being served here at Quince, which is in the historic building where The Meetinghouse restaurant used to be. Owners Lindsay and Michael Tusk have between them impressive restaurant experience, having been part of Oliveto, Chez Panisse and Boulevard. |
