Hakkasan 311 West 43rd Street 212 776 1818 On this weird block of NY - bet you didn't know there was one this undeveloped still - behind a basically unmarked door (look for the symbol), is this London import. But the days of when Hakkasan was one restaurant changing how Brits thought of food have, well, changed, now that Hakkasan is more a mega franchise. And this outrageously priced NY location is not for everyone. It's for high rollers who miss Vegas, Atlantic City or Macao. Basically any gambling town. On our first visit, we're talking $160 for drinks and three appetizers for two people. That's a heck of a bill for happy hour. Though admittedly... we were pretty happy, with our drinks. The one exception is one wine selection at $10/glass, reasonable. But food is quite expensive, with many mains over $35. So on our second visit, lunch was $60 per person, and we were still hungry. Most things we tried were pretty tasty, especially the Cantonese classics (lettuce wraps and dim sum were lovely), just there's cheaper nice Chinese eats to be had. At these prices, you would expect the service to be impeccable. And it is. Waitstaff seem genuinely happy and at ease, with a casualness about them, that we liked. So for those with an expense account, or those looking to impress a date, this spot is great for entertaining. The one downside is the terrible incense smell, which reminds one of those vendor tables on the street, is pervasive, and threatens to ruin one's night with a blistering head- ache. |
