Southern Hospitality 1460 Second Avenue 212 249 1001 From devilled eggs to pulled pork to Memphis style ribs to fried catfish to fried pickles, Justin Timberlake, Eytan Sugarman, and Trace Ayala didn't miss a thing. This immediately-packed spot near 76th Street is at once campy and comfortable. The log cabin décor was created from two whole trees (one of which was rescued from Hurricane Katrina) and is juxtaposed with such kitsch items as a Big Buck Hunter video game and camping lanterns, lending the surprisingly large two room restaurant a theme-restaurant element that works. That is, it is at once the place you'd go for a beer on the weekend to watch the game and also the kind of place to bring a family (if say someone's family is totally freaked out by visiting their kid in NY.) Portions are large and there literally is something for everyone: wings, oyster po' boys, meatloaf, fried (or grilled) chicken salad, the menu just goes on and on. The winner hands- down are the fried green tomatoes. Like everything else it's large enough to be an entrée. Fried catfish comes in a close second. The verdict? While we think there's better fried chicken in town, it is a welcome addition to the Upper East side and you just might find yourself wondering how to get invited to Justin's for Thanksgiving. |
