Our favourite spot of late for prickly pear margaritas and caipirinhas, Joey Luera's (Sugar) new place is a great hangout for true fans of Mexican food and culture such as Gael García Bernal who comes here to watch soccer. Luera, himself is also an actor having been on the Guiding Light and in Mona Lisa Smile, but we like him for the warm and friendly spot he's created. Ford Models have been known to stop by for the espresso martini and tequila selection. In the kitchen, head chef Paul Varacchi (Mark Joseph Water St. and The Cupping Room) and Mexican sous chef Ramon Sacramento tunr out house-made salsas (Rojo, Tomatillo, Verde), homemade guacamole, coconut Carica shrimp, a flash-fried whole striped bass in a mild tamarind chili glaze called the Pescado Enamorado as well as the traditional Argentinean-style Bistek Evita. Perhaps most fun are the crazy nights when the resident DJ mixes in vintage Shakira and Ibrahim Ferrer with Men at Work and Doctor and the Medics.
