Bolzano’s Bar Cucina
1515 Broadway
212 302 2250

We are constantly being asked where to go in the theatre district so here it is; Bolzano’s Bar Cucina. It’s Marc Packer (Tao) and chef Sam Hazen to the rescue. Located in the Shubert Alley on 45th Street, it’s a 330 seater Italian that is a fresh breath from everything else on Broadway. While there is a theatre crowd here and tourists galore also, it’s handled in the most pleasant, upscale way possible – in fact, it’s so airy and comforting that Christian Slater, David Hyde Pierce, Tim Curry, as well as all the Mets, Giants and Knicks who are Marc fans, all pop in constantly. It’s Italian brasserie food such as a perfect Caesar salad and Mozzarella en Corrozza (almost like a mozzarella bread pudding), with our favourite being the Aunt Ruth’s Sunday Dinner - funnily enough available every day of the week - and which is made up of a Bolzano’s Meatball, “Mom’s Wooden Bowl Salad”, whatever the pasta of the day is, lemon chicken and a cute cannoli cleverly presented, like an Italian bento, in long wooden tray. Designer David Jackson did a good job of mitigating sound and mixing in elements such as antiqued mirrors, Mediterranean blue ceramic and terra cotta tiles which instantly sets Bolzano’s apart from everything else in the neighbourhood.
