English Is Italian 622 Third Avenue 212 404 1700 The GOOD news: If you can never figure out what to order, THIS is the place for you. There is no menu. Every night for just under $40, Todd English cooks up appetisers, pasta and entrees which make up a tour of his version of Italy – and boy is it tasty. On the night we went, that meant, duck liver, spicy sausage croquettes, al dente spaghetti with three kinds of seafood, ribs and about 100 other dishes. Everything from mortadella to celery root to fennel makes an appearance. There’s even mozzarella made at your table (no joke). Plus the wine list is a to- die- for list of Valpolicellas, Barberas, and Montepulcianos priced at a level all restaurants should consider: to move. If you are a foodie, you will think you died and went to heaven – where the part of St Peter is played by owner Jeffrey Chodorow.... The BAD news: If you are a fussy eater, stay home. You’re wasting your time. This is also not a good place for super private wheeling and dealing dinners because the constant interruption with new dishes followed by invariable explanation will drive you CUH- razy. There’s still some kinks in the service wheels: for example, hostess just stood there while we struggled with coats without mention of coat check, wait staff looked at us funny when we asked for serving spoons and when we asked for dipping olive oil for bread, we were told, “no, there’s already a little bit on there.” |
