Tour 102 Eighth Avenue 212 242 7773 In the old Diner24 space is Tour. Same soft beige banquettes and facade stone walls, the cheesiness of the retro 70s Patridge family-esque room is matched by the crowd. Proximity to the MPD has this place filled with bottle blondes, gatecrashers, and wannabe bankers in untucked shirts sleeves yelling across the room about their share houses. The one saving grace is Kenneth Collins in the kitchen. A fun down to earth chef who wants to try every region of cooking at least once, he serves up a winner of a wild mushroom risotto and some other tasty late night nibbles. While his arepas are not quite auténtico and the Pierre Robert mache salade not quite authentique, you forgive him because everything is so earnest. Ingredients are fresh, each dish meticulous and thoughtful and the menu is more than most chefs can do as Collins tries his hand at a wide variety of world cooking. We can't wait to go back to see what he will come up with. We'll just be asking for a corner table away from the fray and keep our fingers crossed for unsurly service. |
