Michael Mina hits the entertainments scene! He's always been a magnet
for celebrity diners but now with partners SBE, their XIV on Sunset
Boulevard is a nightlife and cocktails scene as well owing to the
large outdoor patio as well as the late closing (2 a.m. Thursdays
through Saturday.) Clubby in atmosphere in that L.A. way that only
Philippe Starck can evoke (they call it a European chateau but of
course, this is L.A.), XIV is Mina's modern American cuisine in
tasting portion sizes sorted by such categories as veggies, fish,
poultry and light meat, meat and game, sugar, cheese etc. Make up your
own meal with selections coming out whenever you want. That is, you
could have sugar for appetiser, cheese for main, and shellfish for
dessert if you wanted. We like the chilled Maine lobster with
potatoes, celery, chestnuts, and truffle; pumpkin dumplings with
stewed cherries, brown butter and sage; sake and maple kanpachi with
apple, cipollini onions and shiso; and saffron-braised veal cheeks
with chickpeas, zucchini, and cherry peppers. Kate Hudson, Sidney
Poitier and Kiefer Sutherland have already partaken! Don't miss
Michael’s Caviar Parfait and pastry chef Jordan Kahn's white chocolate
cube with orange blossom cream, coriander, pistachio and sake.
