Social Hollywood 6525 Sunset Boulevard 323 462 5222 Fantabulous Jeffrey Chodorow’s spot Social Hollywood is a runaway hit. Lohans, Stewarts, and Spellings hang out here at what used to be the old Hollywood Athletic Club, but we think what you can expect here is a lot of invites to private parties. Well, that is, if you're someone in the new Hollywood. In a Moroccan-inspired setting chef Joseph Ojeda (from Chodorow's Asia de Cuba), local partner Melissa Richardson, and Chodorow want to bring back some of the glory of when Cecil B. DeMille, Charlie Chaplin, and Rudolph Valentino owned the location. Décor-wise this is done through dim lighting, courtesy of a design by Mark Zeff, which includes a black and white lobby, antique carved-wood bar, chandeliers and a “glass wallpaper” (perfect for showing awards ceremonies, natch). The pinnacle however is the ceiling of the Moroccan Room which was restored to the original 1920’s fresco artwork (which had been plastered over in the Hollywood Athletic Club’s waning years). Food-wise bar nibbles at events might be millionaire devilled eggs, chicken wing lollipops or mini Kobe burgers (ah, so L.A.) in the ground floor ballroom or upstairs in the members only second floor which can be rented out (aka Level II.) But if you're not a Gosling, it's always worth your time to make a reservation to try out the regular dinner menu. No less fun, it includes Turks and Caicos conch in the style of “escargot” and Loup de Mer filled with fennel and leek “fondue” and cooked wrapped in grape leaves, with shaved fennel & lemon slaw. |
