Going straight to jail? Well if it's the Charles Street Jail that has now been turned into the Liberty Hotel, why not! A five year restoration of architect Gridley James Fox Bryant's 1851 creation has turned this into a $150 million luxury showplace in Beacon Hill. Because Reverend Louis Dwight, an advocate for prison reform, had this spot light- filled and done with a 90 foot central rotunda, it now works seamlessly as luxury lodging. Should you forget the past though, a specially commissioned mosaic by artist Coral Bourgeois features penitentiaries scenes and the hilarious "do not disturb" door hangers say "Solitary." Even Alibi, the first floor bar is housed within the jail's former "drunk tank." Try to get one of the key rooms within the most historic part, the Liberty. There are only 18 so across the former jail's exercise yard is a new set of 280 guest rooms. Those of course have luxuries not previously available for prisoners, such as flat panel HD-LCD TVs, private bar, two VOIP telephones plush bathrobes and Molton Brown bath goodies. We're pretty sure the inmates didn't have access (as you will) to the concierge, same-day dry cleaning, evening turn-down, overnight shoe shine, chef Lydia Shire's restaurant Scampo or Clink, exec chef Joseph Margate's spot, either.
